Wellground Alpaca Stud is situated on the edge of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. The farm is nestled under the Westbury Hills near the ancient Westbury White Horse monument.

Rob and Les Rawlins began breeding alpacas back in the 1990's. Their breeding programme involved the finest alpacas they could source for their foundation herd. This paid off with an outstanding herd of top quality UK sourced alpacas.  Careful selection culminated in successfully breeding a white stud male alpaca, ‘Wellground Farleigh’ who won the ‘Supreme Champion’ Award at Europe’s biggest Alpaca Show, the 2004 Royal Bath and West Show.

Rob and Les wanted to farm Alpacas on their smallholding. They needed to live on the land to provide adequate care for the alpacas. Using a sound business plan involving breeding and farming alpacas on the existing 6 acres of grazing land, they successfully obtained planning permission on the smallholding. Permission was given for a Canadian Log Cabin as their farmhouse. The dream of a solid timber log home came true. In March 2003, the farmhouse constructed entirely of Canadian eastern white pine was finished. Click Here for more about the Log Cabin

In 2005, Rob and Les were determined to improve the quality of their breeding stock, they completely rebuilt their breeding herd of alpacas. Having sold all but two of their original herd, Rob and Les were looking for the highest quality alpacas, rather than quantity, they sourced a 'core herd' of Elite female breeding alpacas from South Australia. Selecting genetics from proven bloodlines, genetics that had been successful in the most competitive alpaca show rings in the World. That being Australia.  The NEW Wellground elite alpaca herd had arrived. The new female 'core herd' was then complimented by sourcing four Australian bred Herdsires, also from the finest genetics available. Three herdsires were imported from Australia via quarantine in New Zealand. The fourth was born at Wellground from their best imported Australian female alpaca.

The Wellground future is based firmly around 'quality alpaca breeding'. rather than 'quantity alpaca breeding'. Rob and Les are totally focussed and dedicated to the breeding of the very highest quality of alpacas in the UK today.
